Opening up.

Spring in the Karoo is always a wonderful experience. The days are longer and the air warm in the evenings. Right now the recent rain has given us a freshly pressed look and feel. Seemingly local travelers are feeling the need to stretch their legs away from the city and in the absence of easy international travel are finding their way to Prince Albert. As the town emerges from the effects of lockdown we have been able to share our wonderful facility with aspirant cooks, wedding guests, diners and those just wanting to have a glass of wine while waiting for one of the pizzas for which we have become very well known.

It has been a tough time for African Relish and for most of Prince Albert. For a town that has been named as the most visited Karoo destination, the lack of tourists was devastating. Our team put all their efforts into using the time constructively and we eeked out a living by selling take away meals both fresh and frozen. As we moved to level 3 we were able to start taking in cooking class clients and we are now well on the way to being sustainable once again.

We have lost a few businesses to Covid that used to populate the agenda of the foodie tour but two new ones have popped up. We are working with others to ensure that this very popular activity is as worthwhile as ever.

Probably most exciting is that our local chefs – some of whom started with African Relish as trainees – are running the majority of the cooking classes making them true, local experiences. Hendry Olivier is a whiz at baking croissants, sourdough bread, and baguettes. Rowina Peterson has been with us for the last five years and is now emerging as a most competent chef, her strengths lie in working with Karoo lamb and an ever perfect samosa pastry. Melinda and Shane complete the senior team in management and the Café kitchen.

As we write this an announcement has been made that international travel is to become available with all the obvious caveats about protocols. Thrilling news and hope that we will soon see foreign arrivals, old friends and new adventurers,  joining our South African clients as we navigate our way back to where we left off seven months ago.
